01 The situation
An F rating, driven by science that never became a science practice.
ABC Elementary carries an F rating from the state. The clearest signal sits in the science-assessment data: across grades 3–5, proficiency lands between 14% and 22% — barely a third of the state average near 40%, which is itself nothing to celebrate.
But the proficiency percentage isn't the real story. The performance distribution is. On a typical grade level, the overwhelming majority of students cluster in the bottom two performance bands — the "did not meet" and "approaching" tiers. This is not a handful of students pulling down an average. It is most of a grade level, stuck at the floor.

Read the two bars together: at ABC Elementary roughly 86% of students sit in the two orange-and-light-green bands. The green "proficient" segment barely appears. Raising this school's rating means moving students out of those first two bands — and that is a teachable, specific target.
02 The diagnosis
The test measures doing science. Most instruction only covers it.
The state science assessment is built on three-dimensional standards. Every question hands a student an unfamiliar phenomenon and asks them to reason about it — to combine a core science idea, a science practice (asking a question, building a model, explaining from evidence), and a crosscutting concept, all at once.
A grade level parked in the bottom two bands is the fingerprint of students who have been taught about science but have rarely been asked to do it. They can recognize a vocabulary word; they freeze when a photograph asks them to explain why something is happening. Worksheets and recall drills don't close that gap — they widen it.
The fix isn't more content. It's repetition — students practicing the exact kind of thinking the test rewards, again and again, the way an athlete drills a skill — starting with something real enough that a nine-year-old wants to explain it.
